Manuscript description
Information was obtained from the Library's catalog and through consulting the manuscript (on-site). The edge of the manuscript are harmed by water stains and book worms, but the main text is perfectly legible. The papers are slightly trimmed. There is a writing by a modern hand on the first flyleaf says that this manuscript was owned by the famous historian al-Sakhāwī and it might have been used during the compilation of his famous work “al-Ḍawʾ al-Lāmiʿ” (هذه نسخة السخاوي وعليه خطه ولعلها كانت من مصادره أثناء كتابة الضوء اللامع). Indeed, there a lot of notes in the margins written by al-Sakhāwī some of which are followed by his name (e.g. f.19a, f.134a). There is also a note on f.1a written by a modern hand that introduces the author and the book in which it says that there are several copies of this book in European Libraries like Berlin, Gotha, Paris, Yeni Cami, and Aya Sofia (and in al-Ẓāhiriyya in Damascus). Also, the same hand notes that al-Dumayrī wrote a summary of the book that is currently in the library of Paris The book starts with biographies of the persons who died in the year 77 (i.e. 777 AH) (f.1a), and ends abruptly while discussing the events of the year 806 AH. Some notes about the Ottoman Sultan Abū al-Yazīd by a certain Sufi identified himself as al-faqīr Aḥmad (f.219). Sometimes, the main text is completed in the margins. The words of the text sometimes are not dotted. Extensive use of the margins which mostly contain commentary notes, but also they have correction notes and highlights of the topics discussed in the main text.
