Manuscript description
The manuscript is in fact executed in different hands: there is a change at pages 153-192, where the hand is much less composed and where there are many marginal additions, again at 95-114, with a very composed hand, again at 253-333, where red rubrication is omitted, and then from 333-370 again another hand. Margins contain: several ḥashiyya and general commentary notes, correction notes, preparation notes for red filling in of main text, which are regularly cut off. On p. 5 there are notes in Maghrebi script, and on 335 several lines are crossed out. The two flyleafs before the title page contain a table of contents, and a similar such page has been inserted between pages 44 and 45. The title page has the title written in a descending triangle. Below the title a note gives the author’s death date, but another note comments that this is mistaken, as it is the death date not of this al-Qalqashandī, but of the one who wrote ''Ṣubḥ al-aʿshā''.
- Ownership Statement
Title page also contains several ownership notes: one of them is the amir Ismaʿīl Katkhudā ʿAzbāj Qazdughlī, a member of the powerful 18th century Katkhudā clan; a Maghrebi agent who identifies himself as ʿUmar b. Muḥammad al-Harānī (perhaps al-ʿUmrānī) al-Ḥasanī, who has also added notes on pages 95 (about Ibn Khaldūn) and 127; a note by a certain Aḥmad b. al-sharīf al-Shaddādī al-Ḥusaynī, perhaps dated to 1246; another Maghrebi hand of which only parts of the name(s) are readable (Muḥammad b. ʿAlī […] and Ibrāhīm al-Qāḍī (?)); perhaps a certain ʿAlī b. [Qāsim]; and then a mostly effaced note which can however still be discerned as being by the famous lexicographer Muḥammad Murtaḍā al-Wāsiṭī al-Zabīdī (d. 1732). The title page further contains a seal from the Dār al-Kutub.
