Manuscript description
Two volumes executed by the same copyist filed under the same shelfmark. Several correction notes, as well as several marginal comments linking the information of the main text to other (often historiographical) texts. These later notes are often identified as being written by the important Egyptian writer Aḥmad Rāfiʿ al-Ṭahṭāwī (d. 1873). On p. 369 there are two notes introduced by the letter ḥ, short for ḥāshiyya. Some other notes compare the spelling of names to that found in other manuscript copies of the work. First volume has no colophon, but the colophon of the second volume is dated to 1335 (1916) and states that the manuscript was checked against a copy in the Dār al-Kutub al-Sulṭāniyya (presumably Topkapı in Istanbul) in the following year. The copyist is named as Muḥammad Abī l-ʿAynayn ʿAṭiyya. This copying date is problematic considering the death date of Ṭahṭāwī several years before. Perhaps the comments were made by an unattested descendant of al-Ṭahṭāwī. Before the colophon the colophon of the source manuscript has also been copied: it was dated to 24 Jumādā al-Ūlā 876 (8 November 1471), and was itself copied from a (perhaps autograph) manuscript dated to Rajab 830 (May 1427). The flyleaf of the second volume further informs that pp. 58-60 have been completed on the basis of a manuscript from Damascus. Both volumes are preceded by a table of contents.
