Manuscript description
Extensive use of the margins throughout for corrections and additions, which suggests that this work may, in fact, be a musawwada copy. On f.11a ten lines of text have been crossed out and a piece of paper has been attached to the page with the corrected text. Other notes add information from other texts, which are regularly named: on f.13a there is information taken from al-Dhahabī’s “Kitāb al-Mushtabah [fī asmāʾ al-rijāl]”, and on f.47b from al-Suyūṭī’s “Lubb al-albāb fī taḥrīr al-ansāb”, whose “Ziyād jāmiʿ al-ṣaghīr” is also referred to on f.95b. Many of these notes are related to ḥadīth, which may resonate with the fact that the manuscript’s body text is preceded by 2 densely written folio’s of akhbār lifted from works by al-Samʿānī, al-Khāṭīb al-Baghdādī and Ibn Khallikān. From the latter’s “Wafāyāt al-aʿyān” several biographical entries are also copied after the main work’s conclusion (7 folio’s). The exact relationship between the main text and these “appendices” remains to be studied, but it would suggest that Ibn Ḥajar’s work on Plague was approached as a text that functioned within the world of ḥadīth knowledge reproduction.
