Manuscript description
Naskh script. Black ink. (different degrees of) Red rubrication and overlining, and red inverted commas around poetry hemistichs and three red dots to denote the end of sentences (only in the first two folios). Writing Surface 235x155mm. The mistara is clear throughout the manuscript. Papers are slightly trimmed. F.1a has an illuminated rectangular panel executed in gold, red, (degrees of) brown, and blue which has an upper rectangular that contains the catch-title of the book, a central rosette which has the rest of the title and the author’s name written in not decorated black ink (unlike the upper cartouche). Oriental Papers. The Kurras number is written on the top left side of the recto side (quinion gathering), and the total number is written on a flyleaf on the beginning of the work (i.e. 23). Almost clean margins contain: very few commentary and correction notes, and (sometimes) the names of the ruler discussed in the text. Completion of sentences in the margins. Consistent use of catchwords. Unnamed or dated colophon mentions that this manuscript with copied from the authors autograph f.227a.
The main text ends on f.227a while f.228a,b contains a list of the rulers of Egypt mentioned in this volume of the book (ending with a note saying that this is for anybody who is interested in counting them, but you would find the details in the main text) (f.228b). An ownership stamp (most probably of Sultan Ahmet) (f.1b). TKSM stamp on f.1a. There is an old call number of the manuscript on f.1a “Tārīkh 185”. Ownership statement of Aḥmad b. Fatḥ al-Dīn (al-Rāyid?) (f.1a). Binding: Black leather decorated by stamped turanj (and decorated by vegetal shapes), and decorated envelope flap tucked under the upper cover. The inside of the covers contain glued papers decorated in blue, white, and pink.
