He was the father of al-Qāʾim bi-ʾAmr Allāh and al-Mustaʿīn bi-llāh. He was a relative of al-Wāthiq bi-llāh ʿUmar.
He was khalīfa (7/6/763-1/7/785; 2/791-8/7/808) in Egypt; between 785 and 791, he was deposed and kept under surveillance due to a conflict with sultan al-Ẓāhir Barqūq.
