Then he had returned to the capital city of Cyprus and had stayed there for another month, until the people of Famagusta had sent 4 of their people to the lord of Cyprus, asking him for ʾamān and requesting him for his oath. He swore to them and then went to Jānibak al-ʾAblaq, to whom he said, ‘Swear to these that you will not betray them.’ Jānibak swore that.
Then they asked him to grant them 20 days, and so Jānibak did.
Following, Jānibak, together with the sultani mamluks and the Muslims in his company, went to Famagusta, and the lord of Cyprus sent together with him his khāzindār and one of his amirs.
The whole company then came to Famagusta, where they stayed for 10 days, without any fight. The people of Famagusta produced their wares.
The khāzindār of the lord of Cyprus and the amirs stayed in the capital and sent to the lord of Cyprus and to Jānibak al-ʾAblaq, (requesting them,) ‘Come to us and and you will have Famagusta handed over to you by us.’
They arrived on Saturday 11/05, and descended at al-Ṣābūrī* (Popper suggests Sivori) and consulted on how to enter Cyprus.
Jākumu, the lord of Cyprus said, ‘None of the Muslims is to enter it. You stay at the gate of Famagusta!’ Jānibak and those in his company did not accede to his wishes. They stayed at the gate of Famagusta for 7 days.
Then the lord of Cyprus and the people of Famagusta agreed on killing Jānibak al-ʾAblaq and those in his company, but they were unable to do so.
They opened the gate on Friday 17/05, and wanted to kill the troops at the gate. The troops then returned an all went back to his place. Some of the troops spent the night at the gate.
Then, on Saturday morning, 18/05, the lord of Cyprus summoned Qurqmās, who was accompagnied by a group. When they presented themselves before him, he seized them and put them in custody. Then he and the Franks in his company immediately mounted their horses and went to Jānibak and his Muslim rafaqa, whom the people of Famagusta had already been fighting from within the city.
They unexpectedly put Jānibak and his Muslim rafaqa to the sword. They killed Jānibak and most of his troops, the number of Muslims whom were killed being 275. They plundered their possessions, and to to those Muslims who had lagged behind they showed nothing but arrogance.
Then the lord of Cyprus summoned Qurqmās and said to him, ‘Write a letter to the Egyptian domains!’
Qurqmās said, ‘What should I write?’
Then Yaʿqūb, his wazīr and his qāṣid, who had brought the news, rose to his feet and wrote, in Qurqmās’ name, what came to his mind.
Then Yaʿqūb brought this letter to Cairo and informed the sultan on the aforementioned.
To conclude, Qurqmās al-Ẓāhirī said in his letter that the murdered Muslims had laid on the ground for 4 days, and that the dogs had eaten some of them. The remaining ones were flung into the springs.
