The account of all these events came to Minṭāsh on Dhu l-Qaʿda 15. He was in great consternation when he heard it, and began preparations for al-malik al-Manṣūr Ḥājjī to journey to Syria and make war upon al-Ẓāhir. He accordingly ordered Vizier Muwaffaq al-Dīn to prepare whatever the sultan might need; but the vizier found nothing in the treasuries or armories with which to equip him, and made the plea that all the money had been taken away and expended in the course of the preceding events. Minṭāsh, accepting his excuses, made a request of the chief shafiite cadi, Ṣadr al-Dīn al-Munāwī (whom he had shortly before appointed to the position after the removal of Nāṣir al-Dīn ibn Bint al-Maylaq), saying to him: “Lend me the money held in trust for orphans”; at that time this amounted to a considerable sum. Al-Munāwī, however, refused to comply and admonished Minṭāsh to refrain from his purpose. Unmoved by his admonition Minṭāsh had all the orphans’ funds sealed up.
