Summary
791 AH, 17/08
Al-Nāṣirī now sent amirs Bajmān and Qarābughā al-ʾAbūbakrī with a large detachment, accompanied by the master engineer Shihāb al-Dīn ʾAḥmad ibn al-Ṭūlūnī and a large number of stonemasons and drillers to breach Minṭāsh’s house from the rear and enter it in order to attack him from behind, while Al-Nāṣirī himself should attack from in front. But Minṭāsh perceived their plan and immediatly sent a party of his own men, who fought the Nāṣirīs until they put them to flight; they also captured Qarābughā, and brought him to Minṭāsh.
[Al-Nāṣirī] then stationed a number of archers upon the sultan’s drummery and upon the ʾAshrafī madrasa (afterward destroyed by al-malik al-Nāṣir Faraj and then replaced with a hospital by al-malik al-Muʾayyad) in the Ramp (al-ṣuwwa), and they shot at Minṭāsh with projectile machines and with arrows, killing a number of the populace and wounding many of the Minṭāshīs.
By this time, Al-Nāṣirī had become alarmed and bestirring himself, prepared his followers to attack Minṭāsh. He dispatched for this purpose a large force of mamlūks with some of the principal amirs, including ʾAḥmad ibn Yalbughā, amir of the council, and Jumaq, son of the ʾatābak ʾAytamish al-Bajāsī. They went down to the Rumayla Place and drove away the populace; but the latter then joined the Minṭāshīs, and in a single charge against the Nāṣirīs forced them to retreat ignominiously. ʾAḥmad ibn Yalbughā, however, returned to the fray several times, and the battle continued till the end of the day, with a constant discharge of missiles from the citadel upon the mosque of Ḥasan and from the mosque of Ḥasan upon the citadel.
While this battle was in progress amir ʾĀqbughā al-Māridīnī with his battalion deserted al-Nāṣirī for Minṭāsh, and other amirs followed one after the other in a steady stream; as each one of them came to Minṭāsh he appointed some one to keep him under surveillance and go with him to his home in order to bring his mamlūks to fight against al-Nāṣirī.
