Summary
When the khalīfa was present with them, they put on their weapons and they were joined by some mamālīk sayfīya, ʾAshrafī riffraff and other hungry ones of the lowest class.
As the ʾajlāb saw the condition of the ẓāhirīya, they considered the consequences (of their deeds), and they feared the end of the rule of their ʾustādh. Little by little, they abandoned the ẓāhirīya , and went their own way. The ẓāhirīya were now the only ones who carried on the affair. What possibly could their carrying on result into, without anyone helping them, and a group of their notables having abandoned them, as these feared for the consequences of this affair?
In the meantime, the sultan had prepared himself for fighting them. He descended from the citadel to the Bāb al-Silsila of the ʾIsṭabl Sulṭānī.
The people (i.e. the rebels) engaged in a skirmish with arrows and wanted to draw up their lines (muṣāfaqa, trsl. thus by Popper).
The sulṭānīya, however, rallied against them, and charged them in one charge, thus breaking their ranks. Rather, the (rebels) had scattered before the charge!
The sulṭānīya immediately rushed to the house of Khushqadam, the ʾamīr silāḥ, and there they found the amirs who were under guard there. Among others, they took with them the khalīfa, and they brought them to the sultan.
