Summary
830 AH, 06/02
On the 6th a khilʿa was bestowed upon Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad b. ʿAbd al-Dā’im b. Mūsā al-Barmāwī al-Shāfiʿī. He was appointed mudarris of al-Ṣalāḥīya in Jerusalem, replacing Shams al-Dīn Muḥammad al-Harawī. It had been vacant since his death. The father of this Barmāwī taught the youth to read, and raised his son to pursue knowledge, for he excelled in fiqh, the sources of the law, grammar, and other fields. He was attached to the service of al-Jalāl Muḥammad b. qāḍī al-quḍāt Badr al-Dīn Muḥammad b. ʾAbī al-Baqāʾ. He changed to become one of the nuwāb al-quḍāt in the days of al-Jalāl ʿAbd al-Raḥman al-Bulqīnī. He taught him about justice, and then discharged him. His time in obscurity grew long, as a child, a youth and as an adult, so he went to Damascus. Najm al-Dīn ʿUmar b. Ḥijjī spoke highly of him. He made him his deputy, distinguished him, and improved his situation. He was blessed until he arrived with Ibn Ḥijjī and he took over as kātib al-sirr, and he rose along with him. He was given a salary, and his standing rose among al-nās, until he was appointed to al-Ṣalāḥīya.
