Summary
End of 06/0857:
Amir Sayf al-Dīn Qānṣūh b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Nawrūzī, an amir of Damascus, died there in the end of 06/0857. He was around 70 years old. He was originally a mamluk of amir Nawrūz al-Ḥāfiẓī, the nāʾib of Damascus. He became a khāṣṣakī after the death of his ʾustādh, during the reign of al-Malik al-Muʾayyad Shaykh. Then he was promoted amir 10, after the death of al-Muʾayyad. Then he was promoted amir 40, during the reign of al-Ẓāhir Ṭaṭar. He remained thus for many years, until he was removed by al-Malik al-ʾAshraf Barsbāy, (who transferred him) to the position of nāʾib of Tripoli. Then he transferred him to the position of ḥājib of Aleppo, then to the position of amir 100 in Damascus.
He then revolted against al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Jaqmaq and allied himself with amir ʾĪnāl al-Jakamī in rebellion. When al-Jakamī was defeated, Qānṣūh went into hiding for some time. Then he appeared and he too was transferred among a number of places, unfortunate in whatever move he made until he died. He was good-looking and brave, with knowledge of archery. Yet, he was unfortunate. I do not think that in all his life he ever owed 1000 dinars, and were it not for shame, I’d say, ‘and not even a second sallārī!’, but that’s enough!
