In the meantime, the caliph and the 4 judges were with the ʾamīr kabīr, as well as the ʾaʿyān al-dawla of the mubāshirūn and the ʾarbāb al-waẓāʾif, and others, while al-Malik al-Muʾayyad was in a very small company only. The night of the aforementioned Sunday passed, while al-Malik al-Muʾayyad was in a most deplorable condition. Those who were with him in the Qalʿa had lost hope on his victory, and most of those with him did not desire to fight. Those (with him) were julbān of his father’s mamlūks, nobody else.
