824 AH, 15/10:
The sultan summoned Shaykh Walī al-Dīn ʾAbū Zarʿa ʾAḥmad b. Shaykh Zayn al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥīm b. al-Ḥusayn al-ʿIrāqī al-Shāfiʿī, gave him a robe of honour and entrusted the function of qāḍī al-quḍāt of Egypt to him, after the death of Jalāl al-Dīn ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. al-Bulqīnī, and he descended in a huge procession with the amirs, the chief judges and the ʾaʿyān, after that it was imposed as a condition of him that he would not accept the intercession of an amir on the day of the speaking of justice. The people were happy with his appointment because he was competent to do so. He mastered the science of hadith, fiqh and other areas, and his way of living was good, he had experience in issuing fatwa’s and had taught some years, he kept himself far from the doors of the amirs and other similar persons.
