وفي خامس عشرين ذي الحجة قدم مبشر الحافي السيفي بطا الخاصكي وأخبر أن الأمير آقبغا المارديني أمير الحاج لما قدم مكة خرج الشريف محمد بن أحمد بن عجلان أمير مكة لتلقيه على العادة ونزل وقبل الأرض ثم قبل خف جمل المحمل.
وعندما انحنى وثب عليه فداويان ضربه أحدهما بخنجر في عنقه وهما يقولان: غريم السلطان فخر ميتا وتم نهاره ملقى حتى حمله أهله وواروه.
وكان كبيش على بعد فقتل الفداوية رجلا آخر يطنوه كبيشا.
وأقام أمير الحافي لابس السلاح سبعة أيام خوفا من الفتنة فلم يتحرك أحد.
ثم خلع أمير الحافي على الشريف عنان باستقراره أمير مكة عوضا عن محمد المذكور وتسلمها.

On 25 dhū l-ḥijja 788, Sayf al-Dīn Buṭā al-Khāṣṣakī, herald of the pilgrimage, arrives and announces that the amir of the pilgrimage ʾĀqbughā al-Māridīnī has arrived in Mekka, where he has been recieved by the sharīf Muḥammad ibn ʾAḥmad ibn ʿAjlān, amir of Mekka.
Then, two murderers (fadāwiyān) kill him, one of them with a khanjar in his neck, and they shouted: “enemy of the sultan !” He fell dead (...). Kubaysh was far and the murderers killed another man, believing he was Kubaysh. The amir of the pilgrimage kept his weapons during one week fearing a revolt (fitna). But nobody moved. Then the amir of the pilgrimage gave a robe to the sharīf ʿInān to be appointed amir of Mekka in replacement of (the aforementionned) Muḥammad. And he handed her over to him.

2 assassins se sont alors jetés sur le shérif et l’ont tué en criant « ennemi du sultan ». Les assassins ont aussi tué un autre en croyant que c’était Kubaysh, oncle et protecteur du shérif. L’émir du pèlerinage a maintenu ses hommes en armes par crainte d’un soulèvement. Puis il investit le shérif ‘InÁn comme émir de La Mecque.
