790 AH, shawwāl
At the same time (shawwāl 790), the news arrived that amir ʾAlṭunbughā al-Jūbānī, governor of Syria, rebelled, and that he beated amir Ṭurunṭāy, great chamberlain of Damascus, and that he purchased many mamlūks to enter his service.
This rumor spread through Cairo, and aroused much popular discussion.
When amir ʾAlṭunbughā al-Jūbānī heard that, he asked the sultan the permission to go to Egypt. The sultan allowed him that. But everybody believed that he would not come. When he received the permission, he rode by post horse from Damascus with his intimates, and arrived in Siryāqūs, outside of Cairo, during the night of thursday 27 shawwāl 790. The sultan learned that, and sent to him amir Fāris al-Ṣarghitmishī ʾamīr jāndār. He arrested him in Siryāqūs, put him in chains, and brought to the prison of Alexandria, escorted (ṣuḥba) by amir ʾAljibughā al-Jamalī al-dawādār.
Then, the sultan ordered (rasama) that Ṭurunṭāy, great chamberlain of Damascus, was appointed governor of Damascus in replacement of amir ʾAlṭunbughā al-Jūbānī. Amir Sūdūn al-Ṭurunṭāʾy brought to him the tashrīf and the taqlīd.
The arrest of amir ʾAlṭunbughā al-Jūbānī distressed the men, both because his innocence of charges spread against him by his enemies had been made clear to the sultan, and because he was one of the chief yalbughāwī ; But it was not too late for them to say anything about it.
