Reports then came one after the other to the sultan that all the Syrian amirs, as well as the ʾAshrafī and Yalbughāwī mamlūks, had acknowledged the sovereignty of al-Nāṣirī; that amir Sūlī ibn Dulghādir, amir of the Turkumān, and Nuʿayr, amir of the Arabs, as well as others of the Turkumān and Arabs, similarly had promised obedience to him in making war upon sultan al-malik al-Ẓāhir. The report stated also that al-Nāṣirī had raised banners of the caliphate, and that, with the exception of Damascus, Baʿalbak, and al-Karak, he had taken and was goerning all the citadels of Syria. The sultan was agitated at this report, while there was great commotion in Cairo, an unlimited amount of discussion among the men, and a great variety of opinions.
