Summary
791 AH, Tue, 28/05
News of al-Nāṣirī’s encampment at Qaṭyā with his armies arrived at Cairo, but no movement was undertaken there. In the night before the arrival of the news, however, i.e., the eve of Tuesday, I jumādā 28, a large number of the amirs with many mamlūks had fled to al-Nāṣirī; they included Ṭaghaytamur al-Jariktamurī, ʾArslān al-Laffāf, and ʾUrunbughā al-ʿUthmānī, and when they met al-Nāṣirī they acknowledged his suzerainty (dakhalū taḥt ṭāʿati-hi). On their way thither they had also happened upon amir ʿIzz al-Dīn ʾAbū Daraqa, kāshif of Lower Egypt, who had left al-malik al-Ẓāhir in search of news; they had flogged him, taken all that he had with him, and forced him to accompany them to al-Nāṣirī. When they came to al-Nāṣirī they urged him to move quickly, telling him that al-Ẓāhir was filled with fear and was deterred by cowardice from confronting him; al-Nāṣirī, who until now had been vacillating in his attitude toward al-malik al-Ẓāhir, was emboldened by this report.
