Al-Kujkunī lodged al-Ẓāhir in the Copper Hall of the citadel of al-Karak. There was living in that city at the time the wife of its previous governor, Maʾmūr; she was the daughter of the ʾatābak Yalbughā al-ʿUmarī al-Khāṣṣakī, who had been al-Ẓāhir’s master, and because of the fact that al-Ẓāhir had been the mamlūk of her father Yalbughā she brought him all that he needed. It is true that al-Nāṣirī also had been one of her father’s mamlūks, but she chose to serve al-Ẓāhir; she accordingly brought him now an appropriate meal, and not only continued to do this for several days but also performed for him other services to which he had been accustomed in the days of his sultanate.
