A feeling of antipathy toward the mamlūks ẓāhirīya, as well as fear of them, now began to dominate Minṭāsh. Though he had promised that if victorious against al-Nāṣirī he would release their master al-malik al-Ẓāhir Barqūq from the prison of al-Karak, he failed to do so, nor did he bestow on any of the mamlūks ẓāhirīya emirates or fiefs, while on the other hand he gave evidence of favoritism toward his own comrades (khushdāshīya) and mamlūks and toward the sons of the men (ʾawlād al-nās).
