Text
Summary
791 AH, after 03/09
Minṭāsh then arrested a number of prominent mamlūks ẓāhirīya who were among those who had ridden in revolt with him at the beginning of his action and by means of whom he had at that time strengthened his own position; and placing them together with their comrades mentioned before, he imprisoned them all in the citadel towers, without sparing a single one.
I think that in doing this he perhaps was acting in conformity with the verses of al-Mutanabbī:
“Let the tears that flow from the eyes of foes not befool thy heart
“To thy youth, against foes thou’dst compassionate, thy compassion show;”
“For no honor high can be safely held from all hurt and harm,
“till on every one of its many sides streams of blood shall flow.”
