ثم تهيأ الملك الظاهر للعود إلى الديار المصرية، ورحل من شقحب، فأتاه عند رحيله منطاش بعسكر الشام ووقف على بعد، فاستعد الملك الظاهر للقائه فلم يتقدم منطاش.
ثم ولى منطاش إلى ناحية دمشق، فأراد الملك الظاهر أن يتبعه، فمنعه من ذلك أعيان دولته وقالوا له: أنت سلطان مصر أم سلطان الشام امض إلى مصر واجلس على تخت الملك، فتصير الشام وغيرها في قبضتك. فصوب الملك الظاهر هذا الرأي، وسار من وقته بمن معه من الملك المنصور والخليفة والقضاة إلى جهة الديار المصرية.

Then al-malik al-Ẓāhir prepared to return to Egypt. As he set out from Shaqḥab, Minṭāsh and the army of Damascus returned and halted some distance away; but when al-Ẓāhir prepared to meet him Minṭāsh failed to advance and then turned back toward Damascus again.
Al-Ẓāhir proposed to pursue him, but the notables of his government interposed and said to him: “Are you the sultan of Egypt or of Syria ? Proceed to Egypt, and ascend the throne there; Syria and elsewhere will then be in your grasp.” Al-Ẓāhir then approved this advice, and immediatly set out for Egypt with al-malik al-Manṣūr, the Caliph and the judges.
