Summary
817 AH, 21/04:
He felt reassured by this and descended the citadel of Damascus with the amirs and the ʾaʿyān that were with him, on 21/04, after that al-Malik al-Muʾayyad had fought about 25 days or more, and Nawrūz walked until he entered to al-Malik al-Muʾayyad.
When al-Malik al-Muʾayyad saw him, he stood up and went to him. Nawrūz kissed the ground and wanted to kiss al-Muʾayyad’s hand, but he prevented him from doing this. Amir Nawrūz sat down in front of him and below him were his companions amongst the amirs: amir Yashbak b. ʾAzdamur, Ṭawkh, Qamish, Barsbughā, ʾĪnāl al-Rajabī and others. The council was full with amirs, chief judges, and the armies of the sultan. The chief judges said: This is a day blessed by peace and the sparing of blood amongst muslims. But qāḍī Nāṣir al-Dīn b. al-Bārizī, the kātib al-sirr said: “A blessed day if this is accomplished.” And al-Malik al-Muʾayyad said: “Why should it not be accomplished, as we swore an oath to him and he swore an oath to us?” and qāḍī Nāṣir al-Dīn said to the other judges: “Judges, is the oath of the sultan valid?” and qāḍī al-quḍāt Jalāl al-Dīn al-Bulqīnī said: “No, by God, it does not meet the intentions of the one who made it.” Thereupon al-Malik al-Muʾayyad ordered to arrest amir Nawrūz and his companions and all of them were immediately arrested, tied and imprisoned in a room of the stables, until amir Nawrūz was killed that night. His head was brought to Egypt, by amir Jarbāsh, and arrived in Cairo on Thursday 01/05 and was hung at the Bāb al-Zuwayla. Drums were beaten and Cairo was decorated because of this event.
