While this was going on there arrived at Cairo ʾAḥmad ibn Shukr, a guide, who spread the news in Cairo that al-malik al-Ẓāhir Barqūq was on his way to Egypt; next Julbān al-ʿĪsāwī al-Khāṣṣakī arrived and reported that al-Ẓāhir had set out from Gaza on Thursday, Ṣafar 2. The tidings were announced by the sounding of drums, and the [madrasa] al-Ẓāhirīya was perfumed with saffron. Buṭā then wrote to the sultan informing him of what had taken place; he reported that he and his followers were in control of Cairo and had established tha Friday sermon in his name, and gave him the details of what had happened to them. Sharīf ʿInān ibn Mughāmis, accompanied by ʾĀqbughā al-Ṭūlūtamurī known as al-Lakkāsh, was sent to carry this letter to al-Ẓāhir on Saturday, Ṣafar 4.
