855 AH, Mo 05/01:
On Monday the 5th sultan al-Malik al-Ẓāhir sat the qaṣr ʾaʿlā of the Citadel, inside the qaṣr ʾablaq and summoned Ḥamza, the son of ʾamīr muʾminīn al-Mutawakkil ʿAlā Allāh ʾAbī ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad. The judges and the ʾaʿyān dawla were present and gathered to take the allegiance to this Ḥamza. Chief judge Sharaf al-Dīn Yaḥya al-Munāwī al-Shāfiʿī commenced the allegiance ceremony with a short khutba without meaning. Then he was silent during the khutba, thinking that the allegiance already had passed.
With this kātib sirr sharīf judge Kamāl al-Dīn Muḥammad b. al-Bārizī started en eloquent khutba praising Allāh and he lauded His prophet Muḥammad, then the caliphate with words full of eloquence and goodness that led to the completion of the allegiance. The sultan took it, and those present of the judges and the ʾaʿyān according to their rank.
Then the mentioned judge Kamāl al-Dīn asked the caliph to empower the sultan, give him authority over the subjects and make him act in the realm as he wished. He enumerated to him some of these sayings.
After that the sultan summoned the caliphal tashrīf and put it on the mentioned Ḥamza. The sultan jumped to his feet until he had put it on. He returned and read the Fatiḥa. Then he stood up and descended to his house with before him the wujūd dawla of the judges, amirs and ʾaʿyān dawla. The people gathered to see him and he was called al-Qāʾim bi-ʾAmr Allāh.
