Monday, the 20th. The sultan sat in the Palace of Justice (dār al-ʿadl) as was customary, and then went to the Castle with the amirs; there amir Buṭā advanced toward the Sultan and said to him: “I have heard what has been said of me - here I am”; and drawing his sword, he placed a scarf about his neck. The sultan asked the amirs what Buṭā meant, and acted as though he had heard nothing of the report. The amirs mentioned the fact that there had been rivalry (tanāfasa) between Kumushbughā, raʾs nawba, and amir Baklamish al-ʿAlāʾī, great amir of the horse; that amir Buṭā and Maḥmūd al-ʾustādār also had spoken to each other in harsh terms (mukhāshana fī l-lafẓ), and therefore the rumor mentioned had spread (ʾashāʿa al-nāsu mā ʾashāʿū). The sultan brought the amirs together and, making peace between them, swore them allegiance to himself; he then made the mamlūks take similar oaths again. Thus he calmed the feelings of all by his gentle words and his shrewdness, although some suspicion still remained in his own mind. The Sultan then caused a certain ẓāhirī mamlūk to be brought to him who was suspected of spreading the rumor of insurrection; after a painful bastinado the mamlūk was crucified and after being publicly exhibited on camelback was imprisoned in the Shamāʾil Treasury prison; nothing was ever heard of him thereafter. The sultan also arrested Yalbughā, an amir of 10, and he likewise was crucified while a herald proclaimed with reference to him: “This is the recompense of one who sows discord among the amirs.” The civil strife which had almoste broken out was thus quieted.
