Summary
792 AH, after 20/07
After the departure of the armies a number of the mamlūks of Baydamur, Ṭāz, and Jantamur, with various groups of the populace (al-ʿāmma), had risen against ʾAytamish with the intention of taking the city from him. ʾAytamish had sent a dispatch from the Damascus citadel to Salamīya informing the amirs and governors there. Al-Nāṣirī, as soon as he heard the report, had taken a party of soldiers, and riding by night with ʾĀlābughā al-ʿUthmānī, great chamberlain of Damascus, had fought with the insurgents a sever battle in which large numbers of the populace and of the Turks were killed on both sides. Al-Nāṣirī had finally been victorious and had made a number of prisoners, whom he had halved at the waist below the citadel of Damascus; he had seized also about seven hundred others and cut off their hands (this is reported on the authority of shaykh Taqī al-Dīn al-Maqrīzī, God be gracious to him), and had imprisoned still others.
