The ʾiqṭāʿāt of Syria are two thirds of those in Egypt, except for the nāʾib ash-Shām. (masālik) The nāʾibs of Syria have no say in the promotion of an amir in stead of an amir who died. When an amir dies, the sultan is informed and he promotes whom he wants, either someone from his court who then is sent away, or someone who is at the spot. As for a soldier of the ḥalqa, the nāʾib appoints him, which has to be confirmed by the sultan.
