During the reign of an-Nāṣir b. Qalāwūn it is said that there were three ḥājibs, one of them being ḥājib al-ḥujjāb, who was called in the dīwān al-ʾinshāʾ at the sultanic gates ʾamīr ḥājib. Usually he was a muqaddam ʾalf, since ancient times onwards. He was the second in grade after the nāʾib, and it was his task to sit in the dār al-ʿadl, and not to stand, like the ḥājib al-ḥujjāb stood before the sultan in Egypt. And when the nāʾib left Damascus for some mission, he was the nāʾib al-ghayba, in his place. And when a prescript (marsūm) of the sultan appears, to arrest the nāʾib al-salṭana of it, he was the one who arrested him and imprisonned him or so, as is ordered to him, and he attended to the matters of the city, until another nāʾib came. And the two other ḥājibs are two amirs of forty, or an amir of forty and an amir of ten. Sometimes, they were with four : the ḥājib al-ḥujjāb, and three amirs of forty or two of forty and one of twenty, ten or another. Their rank in the mawkibs was that the ḥājib al-ḥujjāb was on the right side, and who followed him in rank on the left side. During the reign of al-Zāhir Barqūq there came five or six [ḥājibs]. It is not common that to anyone of them an august marsūm is written by the august gates at his appointment. The nāʾib of it takes no part in the writing of what is registered for anyone of them.
