The great amir Yalbughā al-Nāṣirī then summoned the amirs and again asked their counsel regarding whom he should elevate to the sultanate of Egypt. Much discussion ensued; most of the amirs desired the succession of al-Nāṣirī himself, the exceptions being Minṭāsh and a party of the ʾAshrafī amirs. Finally the decision was reached to make al-malik al-Ṣāliḥ ʾAmīr Ḥājj, son of al-malik al-ʾAshraf Shaʿbān, sultan for a second time. This decision was reached after the amirs had been unable to effect the appointment of al-Nāṣirī because he had refused to accept and had said: “The wise policy is to make al-malik al-Ṣāliḥ ʾAmīr Ḥājj sultan because al-malik al-Ẓāhir deposed him without justification.” Thereupon they immediatly ascended from the Stables to the citadel, summoned al-malik al-Ṣāliḥ, made him sultan, and changed his royal name to al-malik al-Manṣūr, as (God Exalted willing) I shall narrate at the beginning of the second chapter concerning him after I shall have recounted the events of the individual years of al-malik al-Ẓāhir’s reign from beginning to end, as is the custom in this work
