Summary
When the sultan had been prayed over at the Bāb al-Qalla, his bier, covered with the muraqqaʿa (Popper ‘patched cloak) of the fuqarāʾ, was carried out and taken down by way of the Bāb al-Mudarrij. Not many people accompagnied his bier. Rather, accompagnying it, in front of the bier, around it or following it were less than 20 people, of the amirs and the khāṣakīya, most of them being ʾajnād. None of the amirs 100 and none of the mubāshirīna accompagnied his bier, something that went against custom, except for amir Sharaf al-Dīn b. Kātib Gharīb, the ʾustādār, and a number of amirs 40 and amirs 10.
They took his corpse out, and the people (al-nās wa l-qawm) thronged together around his bier, until they had taken it up to his turba and his madrasa, which he had built in al-Ṣaḥrāʾ, close to the Qubbat al-Naṣr.
He was buried in the qubba in the madrasa.
I attended his burial.
On the day of his death, the people were not mourning for him very much, but they mourned for him deeply afterwards, when ʾatābak Yilbāy became sultan. Indeed, the loss of him was severely felt by all people when Yilbāy became sultan.
Al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Khushqadam, God’s mercy be upon him, died at the age of approximately 65, as was dictated to me in his own words, after he had become sultan.
