Text
Summary
02/04/0872:
On Saturday 2, the sultan began distributing the nafaqa among the sultani mamluks, (supposedly) giving 100 dinars each. The nafaqa was distributed in a most repugnant way, that is, the strong were given the nafaqa, while those absent were cut off from it, the aged ones were given (only) half a nafaqa or a quarter of it, while the ʾawlād al-nās and the ṭawāshīya were completely prevented from getting one, even though that had been the custom. It was Yilbāy who introduced this innovation, and hence, the imprecations on his account multiplied. The people prognosticated the end of his rule, as he had cut off the rizqs of the people, and so it was.
The sultan also banned amirs 100 and others from the nafaqa, giving only to those among them who had been assigned (kuttiba) for the trip, to nobody else.
Because of this and similar reasons, the people started disliking al-Ẓāhir Yilbāy, disaffection towards him grew strong, and there was a lot of talk on his avarice. His faults were counted, while his good qualities, provided he had some, were forgotten.
The nafaqa was distributed on Saturdays and Tuesdays, one ṭabaqa or less a day. Hence, the distribution of the nafaqa lasted for many days.
On the whole, the days of al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Yilbāy were unfortunate ones, with little good and much evil.
