Summary
854 AH, 28/10:
Amir Sayf al-Dīn ʾArkamās al-Ẓāhirī, the dawādār kabīr, died on Friday the 28th of Shawwāl as baṭṭāl in Cairo. Originally he was one of al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Barqūq’s mamluks. He remained long among the jundīya until al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Ṭaṭar granted him an amirate of 40 and made him nāʾib qalʿa of Damascus. He remained there until al-Malik al-ʾAshraf Barsbāy transferred him from it to a taqdīma ʾalf in Eygpt. In the niyābat qalʿa of Damascus was as replacement amir Ṣaghitmish -a mamluk of my father- entrusted. After that al-ʾAshraf made him raʾs nawbat nuwab, after the arrest of Taghrī Birdī al-Maḥmūdī. Then he made him dawādār kabīr, after the expulsion of amir ʾUzbak to Jerusalem. He remained in the dawādārīya until al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Jaqmaq dismissed him and banished him to Damietta. For years he stayed in that port. Then he was asked to Cairo, where he remained as baṭṭāl until he died.
He was religious, but negligible, and of little evil or good.
