Summary
Shīrīn al-Rūmīya, the mother of al-Nāṣir Faraj b. Barqūq:
She was (ibn ʿamm) a wife of her master.
When her son became sultan, she became the khawand kubrā, and took up residence in the Qāʿat al-ʿAwāmīd, in the Qalʿat al-Jabal, after khawand ʾAzad, the wife of her sayyid, had moved out. She didn’t stay there long, as she fell ill and had to remain in bed. Talk increased over the cause of her illness, and some people suspected that she had been bewitched, while her son suspected some of the khawandāt, the wives of his father, of having done this, out of jealousy and hatred, as she was of perfect beauty and of good conduct, in terms of decorum, leadership and nobility, these combined with great modesty, goodness and religion. She displayed both kindness and good deeds. She renovated the Ribāṭ al-Khawzī in Mecca, and created a waqf for its support. She fixed those parts of it that had been ruined.
She died in 12/02, and was buried in the Madrasa Barqūqīya. God have mercy upon her!
Our shaykh has briefly dealt with her in his ʾInbāʾ, where he stated that she was most kind and pious, while al-ʿAynī thought even higher of her (zāda al-ʿaynī?). A jāriya was suspected of having bewitched her, and she was beaten until she accused a Christian kātib, who was then punished, even though he did not confess. He was imprisoned until he died, together with the jāriya.
