Summary
17/10/0862:
The caliph and ʾamīr al-muʾminīna, al-Qāʾim bi ʾamr allāh ʾAbū l-Baqāʾ Ḥamza, son of al-Mutawakkil ʿalā llāh ʾAbū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad, al-ʿAbbāsī al-Miṣrī, passed away in the harbour of Alexandria, being deposed from the caliphate, on 17/10/0862. His nasab has been dealt with in the biographies of his ancestors on a number of places in our writings, such as the Mawrid al-Laṭāfa fī Dhikr Man Waliya l-Salṭana wa l-Khilāfa, and others. Al-Qāʾim bi ʾAmr Allāh became the caliph after the death of his brother, al-Mustakfī Sulaymān, without having been the heir-apparent, but chosen as such by al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Jaqmaq. He remained caliph until ʾatābak ʾĪnāl al-ʿAlāʾī revolted against al-Malik al-Manṣūr ʿUthmān, the son of al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Jaqmaq. The caliph sided with ʾĪnāl against al-al-Malik al-Manṣūr ʿUthmān most energetically. When ʾĪnāl became sultan, he was grateful to him for this, and he raised his station in the highest degree. In the days of this sultan, the caliph enjoyed an honour and authority that no other caliph of his ancestors had ever approached. After that, there was the revolt of a number of Ẓāhirī mamālīk ṣighār against al-ʾAshraf ʾĪnāl, who summoned the caliph. He came to them and allied himself with them most firmly. Yet, their move was not successful and the fitna immediately subsided, as we have discussed in the beginning of this chapter in detail. When the matter had subsided, the sultan summoned him to the citadel, reproached him for what he had done, and imprisoned him in the Baḥra at the Qalʿat al-Jabal. He deposed him from the caliphate, (replacing him) by his brother, al-Mustanjid Yūsuf. Then he sent him off to the prison of Alexandria, where he was imprisoned for some time. Then he was released from prison and ordered to take up residence in Alexandria wherever pleased him. He resided there until he died. God have mercy upon him!
