Thanks to onions, 500 amirs and mamlūks ẓāhirīya manage to escape from the Treasury of the Privy Funds (khizānat al-khāṣṣ) through a subterranean passage, that leads them to the ʾAshrafī barracks (ṭabaqat al-ʾashrafīya).
They choose Buṭā al-Ṭūlūtamurī al-Ẓāhirī as their leader.
They attack the gate of the ʾAshrafī barracks, and take it although a mamlūk named Tamurbughā has been killed by the watchmen (al-ḥurrās al-muwakkilūn bi-ḥafẓ al-bāb). They used their shackles as weapons.

They then started to shout “Tukā, O Manṣūr”, so that Ṣarāy Tamur believed that Tukā was revolting against him. Then, he “went down from the Royal stables by way of the Gate of the Chain toward the house of amir Quṭlūbughā the chamberlain in the Rumayla Place near by.”

Buṭā and his companions took the Stables and “collected all of Ṣarāy Tamur’s effects, horses, and arms; he also seized the followers of Minṭāsh and liberated the imprisoned followers of al-Ẓāhir. Then he took possession of all the other horses in the Stables and immediatly ordered that the drums should be beaten, which was done.”
