It is detached from the office of nāʾib as-salṭana in it, for he has no authority (ḥukm) over the citadel, nor over its nāʾib, like in Damascus. Usually, its nāʾib is an amir of forty, appointed by the sultanic gate with a marsūm sharīf. Some forty Baḥrīya-soldiers are in it, prepared to guard it, who stay in it without leaving it for a journey or anything else. A number of them sits during every guard at the second gate of it, from the moment of its opening at dawn until its closure at dusk. They perform the guard during the night and the drum is beaten at the passing of every four ʿʿdegreesʾʾ, as already mentioned for Damascus.
