As for the amirs muqaddams ʾalf, their number used to be twenty four amirs, every one of them having in his service one hundred mamlūks and officials as usual. He is a commander of thousand ḥalqa-soldiers. Because of that, he is called amir of hundred, commander of a thousand. At his door, eight drums were beaten, two ṭablaʾs an hour, two flutes, and four trumpets, and the new flutes. The ʾatābak equals that twice. Among the muqaddams ʾalf, there are who occupy an office, and who have no office.
