842 AH, [12/06]:
amir Sayf al-Dīn Qurqumās b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Shaʿbānī al-Ẓāhirī -then al-Nāṣirī-, the ʾatābak ʿasākir of Egypt who was known as ʾAhrām Ḍāgh -which means mountain of pyramids because of his haughtiness
Originally he was of the al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Barqūq kuttābīya. Then he was owned by al-Malik al-Nāṣir Faraj, who manumitted him and made him a khāṣṣakī at the end of his reign. In the reign of al-Muʾayyad Shaykh he became one of the dawādārīya ṣighār and after the death of al-Muʾayyad he was made an amir of 10. After that he was entrusted the dawādārīya thānīya and he was granted an amirate of 40. He continued like this until 826, when he was granted an amirate of 100 in Egypt and it was decreed for him to travel to Makka with sharīf ʿAlī b. ʿInān, the amir of Makka after Ḥasan b. ʿAjlān as his sharīk in the amirate of Makka. He headed to Makka and stayed there for about a year by conjecture. He was requested in Cairo and appointed to his amirate until he was bestowed the ḥujjūbīya ḥujjāb on the 15th Shawwāl 829, in replacement of amir Jarbāsh al-Karīmī who was known as Qāshuq because of his transfer to the ʾimrat majlis. He took up the ḥujjūbīya with much respect, pride and power, in as much that he was feared by all.
