Summary
16/02/0859:
On Tuesday 16/02/0859, amir Sayf al-Dīn Julbān b. ʿAbd Allāh al-ʾAmīr ʾĀkhūr, the nāʾib of Damascus, passed away there, aged around 80. Many things are being said regarding the one who has manumitted him and regarding his race. As for the one who has manumitted him, some say that this was amir Tanbak al-ʾAmīr ʾĀkhūr al-Ẓāhirī, some say Sūdūn Ṭāz, and some say ʾĪnāl Ḥaṭab. As for his race, he is most commonly held to be a Circassian, but other things are said as well.
(After being manumitted), he served with amir Jārkas al-Qāsimī al-MUṣāriʿ, then with (my) father, and then with al-Malik al-Muʾayyad Shaykh, in the days when the latter was still an amir. When al-Muʾayyad became sultan, he made him ʾamīr’ ʾākhūr thālith, and then ʾamīr ʾākhūr thānī. Following, he favored him with an amirate 100 in the Egyptian domains. Then he went to Syria with a tajrīda, together with the other amirs who joint ʾatābak ʾAlṭunbughā al-Qirmishī. He was the seized together with some Muʾayyadīya amirs, and imprisoned in the Syrian domains, until he was set free by al-Malik al-ʾAshraf Barsbāy, who promoted him amir 100 in Damascus. Then, he transferred him to the position of nāʾib of Hama, following amir Jār Quṭlū, as the latter was transferred to the position of nāʾib of Aleppo, following amir Tanbak al-Bajāsī, who was transferred to the office of nāʾib of Damascus, following the death of amir Tanbak Miyiq al-ʿAlāʾī, in Rajab 826.
Julbān remained in the office of nāʾib of Hama for many years, until al-Malik al-ʾAshraf Barsbāy transferred him to the office of nāʾib of Tripoli, following the death of amir Ṭarabāy, in Shaʿbān 838. Her was succeeded as nāʾib of Hama by amir Qānī Bāy al-Ḥamzāwī.
Then al-Malik al-Ẓāhir Jaqmaq transferred him to the office of nāʾib of Aleppo, following the rebellion of amir Taghrī Birmish al-Turkumānī, at the end of Ramaḍān 842. He was succeeded as nāʾib of Tripoli again by Qānī Bāy al-Ḥamzāwī.
He didn’t stay long in Aleppo, as he was transferred to the office of nāʾib of Damascus, following the death of ʾatābak ʾĀqbughā al-Timrāzī in Rabī ʿ al-ʾĀkhir 843. He was succeeded as nāʾib of Aleppo by amir Qānī Bāy al-Ḥamzāwī.
He remained nāʾib of Damascus for a number of years until he died on the aforementioned date. He was succeeded as nāʾib of Damascus by Qānī Bāy al-Ḥamzāwī.
He had been the nāʾib of Damascus for 15 years, which was something that hadn’t befallen anybody of the nāʾibs other than him, after the office of amir Tankiz al-Nāṣirī.
In his biography, there is another strange thing, that is: every time he was transferred from one office of nāʾib to another during this period of over 30 years, he was always succeeded by Qānī Bāy al-Ḥamzāwī. However, the latter did not have a long period of appointment, as he came to Egypt as an amir and stayed there for some years. He then returned to the office of nāʾib of Aleppo, after one other person had held this office after him. When Qānī Bāy al-Ḥamzāwī was appointed as nāʾib of Aleppo a second time, Julbān died some time later. Qānī Bāy was then transferred to the office of nāʾib of Damascus, following Julbān as custom had it. This is a strange coincidence that probably hasn’t befallen any other two persons during these long years and many appointments.
Julbān was one of the noble rulers. He spent his days in prosperity, and was transferred from one noble office to the other until he died. God have mercy on him!
