These aforementioned waẓāʾif, in former times, their position was occupied only by an ʾamīr 100.
That is why we have discussed these before the others that we will discuss.
The rulers of our time have debased themselves up to the point of appointing to some of them ʾajnād. Also, they have abolished a number of noble waẓāʾif, which (previously) were occupied only by an ʾamīr 100, such as the position of nāʾib al-salṭana, because the last great man who occupied it was Timrāz al-Nāṣirī al-Ẓāhirī, during the reign of al-Nāṣir Faraj.
Another example is the position of raʾs nawbat al-ʾumarāʾ, for the last one to occupy it was Nawrūz al-Ḥāfiẓī, during the reign of al-Nāṣir Faraj too. This position was similar to that of ʾatābak.
Another example is that of ʾamīr jāndār. Emir ʾAljāy* al-Yūsufī, who had had a fall-out with al-ʾAshraf Shaʿbān, had been transferred to this position from the position of raʾs nawbat al-nuwab.
As for those waẓāʾif that have gone and that were occupied by ʾamīrs 40 and ʾamīrs 10, examples are the shādd al-dawāwīn, the ʾamīr manzil, the shādd al-qaṣr al-sulṭānī, the mihmandār, the muqaddam al-barīd and the shādd al-ʿamāʾir.
Even though some of these waẓāʾif still exist, these are now occupied only by the young men of the people (ʾaḥdāth al-nās). As such, these amount to nothing any more.
We have departed from our goal in a sort of digression. Let us return to what we were dealing with.
