Summary
01/08/0815:
After the death of sultan Faraj, there is a meeting between the high state officials. They express their support for al-Muʾayyad Shaykh, who accepts and so becomes sultan.
The qāḍī’s, the ʾaʿyān, the amirs, the office holders, the ʾahl al-ʿaqd wa l-ḥall and the whole army came and ascended to the Bāb al-Silsila. Qāḍī al-quḍāt Jalāl al-Dīn al-Bulqīnī came forward and swore an oath to him as sultan. Then amir Shaykh stood up from his conference room, entered the sleeping quarters of the Ḥarrāqa, and left them with the black caliphal khilʿa of the sultanate, as customary (version of Al-Maqrīzī: He did not accept the khalifal khulʿ but he did gird the sword). Then they deliberated on his laqab, and they decided that his laqab was going to be al-Malik al-Muʾayyad. Then they gave him the kunya of ʾAbu l-Naṣr because al-Naṣr corresponds to support.
He mounted the relay horse with the signs of the sultanate. The amirs and the ʾarbāb al-dawla walked in front of him, while the qubba and the ṭayr were raised over his head, until he had ascended the citadel. He dismounted and entered the castle of the sultan and sat on the throne of the king. The amirs kissed the ground before him, and kissed his hand and the drums were beaten. Then his name and his sultanate were announced in Cairo and Miṣr. He gave a robe of honour to the qāḍī’s and the amirs as was customary on this days. After his instalment, the new sultan al-Muʾayyad Shaykh sends the judges to the caliph to ask for his recognition. The caliph gives his approval but on certain conditions: he wants to be announced when he descends from the citadel to his house with the sultan, who has to swear allegiance to him.
